Situation: Large global manufacturing organisation experiencing a prolonged period of market change which resulted in frequent organisational restructuring. There was a need to improve line manager skills in dealing with people related issues arising from ongoing change projects. In addition, there was a desire to minimise the amount of support required by operational managers during periods of downsizing whilst minimising litigation risk. A highly unionised environment, there was an underlying need to satisfy union requirements during change and protect employer reputation within local marketplace.
Coaching Support: A bespoke programme for Line Managers, involving group and individual coaching sessions, which were held in advance of a proposed major change announcement. Participants were coached to understand and deal with the personal impact of cultural and change issues. Practical coaching guidance was given providing a framework for dealing with team emotional reactions, maintaining direction and focus, ensuring engagement throughout a period of disruption and delivering difficult messages.
Outcome: Extremely positive feedback from all stakeholders, including Trades Unions. Complete success of next major change programme with significantly reduced negative feedback when compared to previous similar events, due to increased Line Manager capability and confidence. Ongoing positive impact across the business due to improved Line Manager coaching skills and raised self-awareness.
