Background: A large, well established Engineering and Technology Organisation experiencing a prolonged period of market change resulting in frequent restructuring. There was a need to improve line manager skills when dealing with people related issues arising from ongoing change projects. In addition, there was a desire to minimise the amount of support required by operational managers during periods of downsizing whilst minimising litigation risk. A highly unionised environment, there was an underlying need to satisfy union requirements during change and protect employer reputation within the local marketplace

Support:  Working Transitions developed a series of bespoke Line Manager workshops involving 60 Managers. These were held in advance of a proposed major change announcement. Participants were given support and coaching to help them understand and deal with the personal impact of cultural and change issues. Practical guidance was given for conducting  planned “at risk” meetings, dealing with their team’s emotional reactions, providing direction and clarity, ensuring engagement throughout a period of disruption and delivering difficult messages

Outcome: Overall satisfactions score of 5.79 out of 6 from all Line Managers involved. Extremely positive feedback from Trade Unions. Negative feedback from those affected by the redundancy programme was significantly reduced in comparison to previous similar events. Improved Line Manager Coaching skills and an increase in self-awareness had an ongoing positive impact across the business. Working Transitions methodology adopted in future change programmes
